10 Highlights from Kangaroo Island, South Australia

Spring ended up being a wonderful time to visit Kangaroo Island and I was very relieved that I'd booked to stay 4 nights.

Due to the timing of our ferry rides we arrived late afternoon the first night, and left early in the morning on the last day. Staying 4 nights gave me 3 full days for sightseeing and if you love nature and are hoping to see most of the sights I'd recommend having at least this much time, more if possible.

I'd booked to stay at the Mercure which was very convenient in terms of not needing to pack or unpack during the visit, but each day's activities had us driving 1-2 hours in each direction to see the sights.

Below are my top 10 recommended highlights for Kangaroo Island. I'd wanted to visit for a very long time and it was stunning.

  1. Snelling Beach

  1. Stokes Bay Beach

Stokes Bay Beach

When you first get to the car park you see a bay that is nice but it's not the full story. Walking through a rock passage on the right hand side (when looking out to the ocean), depending on the time and tide, you may be able to find Stokes Bay Beach. It was so beautiful, I felt like it was this semi-secret gem and I was so lucky to be there.💛

  1. Emu Bay

When I picture beautiful, remote, white sand beaches, they look like this.

  1. Lavender Farm

For a refreshment stop try the Emu Bay Lavender Farm and their lavender scones.

  1. Vivionne Bay

Vivionne Bay

It was on again off again rain during the trip. Although I was hoping for bright sunny days, I was grateful that the rain kept clearing, and there was something quite special about storm cloud framed views.

  1. Seal Bay

I absolutely loved my visit to Seal Bay, and I could have stayed there for hours watching the adult seals and pups. It was encouraging to see that the colony is protected and I got wonderful views of the sea-lions from the boardwalk. Australian sea-lions are listed as endangered and Seal Bay has the third largest colony in the country.

  1. Ocean Views - Flinders Chase National Park

Visiting Flinders Chase National Park feels a little like being at the edge of the world and there are panoramic ocean views.

  1. The Remarkable Rocks - Flinders Chase National Park

Remarkable Rocks Flinders Chase National Park

The rain was about to hit as we headed towards the rocks. Most visitors were already headed the other way and we had a limited window visting the rocks where there was almost no-one around. We were on our way to the car as the rain hit so the timing was perfect and the remarkable rocks were genuinely remarkable.

  1. Pennington Bay Beach

Just when you think you won't find another really beautiful beach, you do.

  1. Dudley Wines

I'd read about Dudley Wines when researching the trip and decided to book a wine tasting and lunch there on the last day. It was a beautiful place to relax, recharge, and soak up the excellent views.

If you love nature, haven't visited Kangaroo Island yet, and need a holiday, why not visit soon?
