Visiting North Stradbroke Island Was Better Than Expected

Spending some time in Brisbane in March I wanted to take the opportunity to go somewhere new. I tried two day trips from Brisbane, one to Moreton Island which was good but negatively impacted by weather, whereas my visit to North Stradbroke Island was exceptional despite less than ideal conditions.
I booked with Hit The Road Tours and it was a very well organised day. The scenery was better than expected, as was the wildlife viewing. Although there was a bit of rain on the day we were lucky enough to be able to see, do, and enjoy, everything in the itinerary.
As we started the Gorge Walk it was clear the views were impressive. I'd read about the 1.2 kms walk being easy, and although it was all on a well kept boardwalk I was exhausted when I got to the end due the high number of stairs. The walk was harder than I'd hoped for but well worth the effort.
During the walk I was thrilled to see this Osprey and realised there was also a sea turtle swimming in the crystal blue water below!
There was so many beautiful views of the ocean along the walk and coming into the gorge itself, and I was surprised at how close some of the wild kangaroos were eating near the walking track.
After finishing the walk there was a well earned lunch break and I heartily recommend Six Beaches Fish and Grill Bar. It had a lovely ocean view, friendly staff, and the food was fantastic. The fish and chips was some of the best I've had in a really long time.
I wasn't sure if I'd opt for the chance to go swimming but when I saw the water I couldn't help myself. We visited Cylinder Beach and due to the tide at the time there was a stunning waist height lagoon in front of big sandbank before the waves. The water was beautiful.
If I'd been staying on the Island I would have liked to spend a whole afternoon and evening at the renovated Staddie Hotel that looks out over the beach. Next time I'm near Brisbane I would seriously consider a day trip, or weekend away, to do that.
Just when I wasn't sure much could top the day's experiences I got the opportunity to see two koalas in the wild. I think that may only be the third time in my life (and I'm Australian) that I've been lucky enough to see them in the wild.
After a couple more scenic stops it was time to head back to the ferry terminal. It was a full day that exceeded my expectations several times.
Whether you are visiting Australia, or an Aussie visiting Brisbane, if you like scenery, wildlife, and good food, a day trip to North Stradbroke Island is highly recommended.
